Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me) by Reunion (RCA, 1974)

The ultimate karaoke tune…If you can get up and do this one perfectly, you are the k-master!

The goofy tune, sung by Joey Levine, who sang on Ohio Express tunes, Chewy Chewy & Yummy Yummy Yummy, made it up to #8 in late 1974. This song name-checks a lot of rock songs & groups from the 50s & 60s. But what’s funny are the obscure references to groups like The Mahavishnu Orchestra and writer Arthur Janov. They even mention ABBA who just scored a top 10 hit but were fairly unknown and KISS, who were still at least another year before making any impact in America.

Just the fact that a tune like this could get popular shows the liberal nature of pop radio in the 70s. And while I wouldn’t call this an early rap song, I’d like to see any MC rip through this one…maybe Das Efx could have handled it

BTW: Tracey Ullman did a cover of this song on her album, You Broke My Heart In 17 Places. I know, I have no idea why either.
